Did Riot Grrrl - or any variety of DIY/punk feminism - change your life?

stupid question, i know… for better or worse it did, so let’s talk about it.

SOUL REVOLUTION:
A video document of Riot Grrrl’s ongoing legacy

http://www.facebook.com/pages/GIRLS-TO-THE-FRONT-The-True-Story-of-the-Riot-Grrrl-Revolution/133721649994103

*New, extended deadline: July 31!

Did Riot Grrrl (or any variety of DIY/punk feminism) change your life?

Whatever gender you are, whether you’re in your 40s or in your teens, whatever punk rock feminism means to you—we want to hear from you.

We (Cat Tyc and Sara Marcus) are making an interactive video installation at girlstothefront.com, in conjunction with Sara Marcus’s book about Riot Grrrl, Girls to the Front, that’s coming out this fall. The point isn’t to wax nostalgic—or, at least, not to dwell in nostalgia; it’s to acknowledge and celebrate the countless ways that the legacy of Riot Grrrl is still very much alive in all of our lives. And we need your contribution to make this happen.

Send us a video!!

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy. If you don’t have access to a real camera, you can shoot it on a cell phone or a laptop.* And short: 1–3 minutes is plenty. NEW, EXTENDED DEADLINE: JULY 31!

(*If you don’t have any way to shoot video, just send us a photo of yourself that portrays something important about you, and email us your answers to the questions. We’ll fit you in.)

In the video, tell us some or all of these four things:

1. Who are you?
2. Show us your life. (This means whatever’s important to you: art, work, family, home…anything.)
3. How did you first hear of Riot Grrrl (or punk feminism, or whatever)?
4. How has it shaped who you are today?

After it’s done, please send to girlstothefront [at] gmail.com via YouSendIt (www.yousendit.com) which is a free and easy way to send files.

to recognize transgender individuals as human beings.here’s how you can help:

Today, SB207 was passed out the Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee without the amendment which would have added protection for transgender individuals.

Please copy and paste the following message, or write your own, and send it to these e-mail addresses -info@aclunv.org, kathy.detwiler@rrpartners.com, dparks@sen.state.nv.us, mconklin@asm.state.nv.us

The ACLU of Nevada and R&R Partners supported the non-inclusive version of the bill. Senator David Parks is the sponsor of the bill. Assemblyman Markus Conklin chaired the committee hearing.Be sure to include your name and address at the bottom of the message.

Thank you,Lauren ScottExecutive DirectorEquality Nevada—Subject: Re: SB207 – I support the rights of transgender individuals.Message -I support the rights of transgender, intersex and genderqueer (TIQ) individual to have free and equal access to public accommodations.I am very disappointed that Senate bill SB207 (which allows for the protection of gays and lesbians in regards to access to public accommodations) passed out of the Assembly Commerce and Labor Committee today without the added protection for transgender individuals.

In 2008, Jennifer Gale, a 47-year-old transgender homeless woman died in Austin Texas because a homeless shelter refused to allow her access to the facility. A 2008 study of 646 transgender Californians conducted by San Francisco’s Transgender Law Center found that 20 percent of them reported having been homeless, and a third of those said they had been denied access to a shelter.

Transgender individuals have disproportionately low income and often depend heavily on access to public accommodations, such as the library, food banks, homeless shelters and low-cost medical facilities. SB207 in its current form allows transgender individuals to be refused access to these vital resources.

The passage of SB207, without the added protection for transgender individuals, empowers the rights and privileges of one minority group, while once again leaving another behind, to fend for themselves in the streets.Sincerely,{your name}Member, Equality Nevada

NOW PASS THE ERA!!!!! it's been like 70 years, get on it! but at least we are on the way to nationally outlawing hate crimes.

NOW PASS THE ERA!!!!!

(Las Vegas—April 29, 2009) Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed HR 1913, the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act by 249 to 175. The bill would give the U.S. Attorney General the tools to assist states in the criminal investigation or prosecution of any crimes that may be motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim. The bill would specifically not prohibit the exercise of constitutionally-protected free speech.

The house passed the same legislation in the last session of congress but with a bigger majority this session. “Congresswomen Berkley and Titus stood on the side of compassion and justice with their votes in support of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act today. The southern Nevada LGBT community commends them for their courage and thanks them for voting to give law enforcement the necessary tools to track and ultimately prevent as many future hate crimes as possible,” said Candice Nichols, Executive Director.

Yesterday, President Obama urged passage of the Hate Crimes Prevention Act in a statement released by the White House. Along with the President, 300 law enforcement, civil rights and religious organizations are supportive of the bill. The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Reach senator Reid at reid.senate.gov/contact/index.cfm send him an email in support of this bill!
